Q3 Chapter Report

EMILY HANNA, President, NAIOP Greater Toronto

SEPTEMBER 2017 - We are all officially "back to school" and NAIOP Greater Toronto kicked off the fall with a highly informative breakfast on the topic of ESG: Environmental, Social and Governance issues. The panel was extremely informative and offered insight into the increasingly prominent role of ESG on investor decisions in Canada.

The NAIOP Greater Toronto Chapter continued to remain active throughout the summer on Government Relations and Advocacy issues that have a direct impact on the commercial real estate industry. Some of the topics that were at the forefront included:

  • The Commercial-to-Residential Property Tax Ratio: We expect to see reductions implemented in 2019;

  • The City of Toronto's review of the IMIT and Development Charge Exemptions: This is a matter that affects many of our members and we understand that City staff may look to implement significant changes to these programs

Our Government Relations Committee will continue to monitor these and other City initiatives and we will keep our members apprised.

The Chapter's Developing Leaders were also very active this summer. The hard work of three finalist teams was presented on September 26th at the Sixth Annual Development Challenge awards evening. The presentations impressively showcased the real estate development skills of our DLs and student members. This year, Quadrangle provided competition finalists with professional design assistance on project renderings, really enhancing the quality of these presentations.

NAIOP Greater Toronto congratulates the Winning Teams!

The NAIOP Greater Toronto Board of Directors has been busy working through the results of the members' survey that was circulated at the start of summer. We greatly appreciate everyone's participation and feedback and plan on introducing initiatives that will help to ensure we remain a prominent and relevant voice for commercial real estate within the GTA.

As always, I want to thank our members, our many volunteers, and our corporate partners for their contributions to the Chapter. I look forward to continuing to work with the board for the balance of the year.

Have a safe and enjoyable autumn!

Emily Hanna
